The Briar wood is a very old root or burl part of a brush tree found in the Mediterranean Basin and is of the heather plant family. The Briar plant has a root, or burl that helps it survive in dry, harsh climates. The burl that is grown in more fertile areas is more valuable because it has less flaws and blemishes that make it difficult to carve from.

Carvers like the tight, hard grain that needs to be seasoned before carving. It takes much experience and time to carve from this beautiful wood. A root or burl has different kinds of grain, sometimes in patterns of swirls, or waves or other patterns that make the finished product one of a kind. There is no exact duplicates because of the variety of patterns. 

The grain of the wood is not the only important feature of this Chessboard. It takes a long time to develop burls and each burl that is cut needs to be cut carefully so that more can be harvested from the same root. These roots may be 50 to hundreds of years old, and are gathered from briar forests that are opened up for this harvesting.

So you get a one of a kind wooden Chess Board, like no other because of the variety of grain and the value of the rare wood.

This is a beautiful Chess Board with the wood frame complimenting the wood squares.
